Gravel Driveway Maintenance in Stonewall and the Interlake

Acreage driveways around Stonewall, Stony Mountain, Balmoral, and Teulon are long, exposed, and take heavy loads. Maintained once a year they stay smooth; left alone they washboard and pothole within two seasons.

Washboarding is a grading problem, not a gravel problem

Those ripples form where traffic accelerates and brakes on a surface that has lost its binding fines. Adding loose stone on top does not fix it — the ripples come back within weeks.

Scarifying breaks the hardened ridges, remixes the fines back through the aggregate, and lets the surface repack solid.

The crown does the drainage work

Interlake driveways flatten over time as gravel gets pushed to the shoulders. A flat driveway holds water in the wheel tracks, and saturated tracks become potholes on the next freeze.

Regrading rebuilds a centre crown so runoff leaves the driving surface instead of soaking the base.

When you actually need new gravel

If there is still 75 mm or more of material to work with, a scarify-and-regrade is usually enough. New material is worth trucking in only when the base has thinned to exposed clay or the driveway is being widened.

That is why our gravel maintenance starts at $525 — most Stonewall driveways need reworking, not resupplying.

Best time to book

Late spring once the frost is fully out, or late summer before harvest traffic and fall rain. Grading a frozen or bone-dry surface does not let the material knit back together.
